Friends of Children with Special Needs (FCSN):

Friends of Children with Special Needs

FCSN is a nonprofit organization located in the southern Bay Area, dedicated to providing support, friendship, and life skills to developmentally disabled individuals and their families. FCSN was founded in 1996 and has since expanded to a membership of over 300 families, serving around 150 individuals with autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy.

The FCSN website contains newsletters which are bilingual in Chinese and English.

The HRIIC of San Francisco is a county-wide parent/professional collaborative concerned with infants and young children (ages B through 5 years) with special health care needs (CSHCN), and their families.

Services Section: Nicely outlines the available services in San Francisco for Children with Special Health Care Needs, B-5years.

Publications section: Birth-5year developmental checklist for parents, available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.

HRIIC published reports assessing the extent to which children from B -5 with special health care needs in San Francisco are being identified and served.

Parents Helping Parents (PHP):

Founded by parents of children with special needs in 1976, PHP is one of the oldest and largest children’s charities of its kind in the U.S. In 1988, PHP received funds from the U.S. Depart. of Education to become a Parent Training and Information Center for California.

The resource page contains detailed information about thousands of organizations, programs, non-profit corporations, for-profit corporations, government agencies and other supportive groups. The majority are located in the San Francisco Bay Area, but also contains info from other areas of the U.S.

There is a useful section on assistive technology.

There are various parenting support groups, including a Japanese, and a Vietnamese support group.

Special Education Services provides instruction to meet a child's unique needs.
A federal law called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) says that all eligible school-aged children and youth with disabilities are entitled to receive a free appropriate public education.

Support for Families of Children with Disabilities (SFCD):

Support for Families of Children of Disabilities

Since 1982, SFCD has offered information, education, and parent-to-parent support free of charge to families of children with any kind of disability or special health care need in San Francisco. This website contains information on valuable resources found in San Francisco.

A section called “Laws Affecting Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs/Disabilities” is very well put together.

The group’s newsletter is translated into Chinese and is posted on the website. Back issues can be viewed online.

SFCD also collaborates with Asian Perinatal Advocates and Chinatown Child Development Center to provide ongoing support groups for Chinese parents who have children with disabilities.
